Durkheim Is Dead! Macro vs. Micro Beliefs Essay - 766 Words

I have grouped the sociologists in Durkheim is Dead into three groups: macro to micro, micro and macro, and micro to macro. I did not place any one of the individuals into just the macro or just the micro categories. Each one fell into a group that I considered to be in-between. In the macro to micro category, each sociological theory concentrated on one major problem of society and then went on to explain what would have to be done within individuals in order to achieve social progress. Durkheims focus was upon the division of labor being the primary cause of social problems (Berger 123). These people were more politically minded. Similar to Durkheims ideas of collective consciousness, Lenin believed that the ideas of the ruling class became the ideas of the masses (Berger 111). Lenin focused on societal groups and how the individual is stuck within their class. He believed that the working class was being exploited and that society must work towards eliminating this confusion of who should be in charge by forcing the wo rking class to prevail. B. Webb felt there was a relationship between crime poverty. She focused on politics as being the reason for poverty. She said, One must remedy the political order to help poor people.... It was the structure of society that was at fault, not the individual (Berger 130). The next category, macro and micro, was a group in and of itself. Only one sociologist fell into this division. The theories that defined this category oscillated between the effects of society on the individual and visa versa, the effect the individual on society. Simmel blatantly says, My view is somewhere in the middle (Berger 94). Simmels studies were often those of ordinary things people do in the daily routine of life. He was interested in sociation and how individuals reacted to and interacted with other individuals. Is there a God or is he just a myth? The world has been searching for God for ages and philosophers and atheists have debated about this topic. The word God itself is a huge controversy. Is there a God and if He is there why do we still have evil around, where is He? These are the general questions asked by man. On the other side atheists would say that there is no God for the universe evolved by itself and we came into being by accident. But the real question is how can we come into existence by just â€Å"itself† for the word itself does not make sense. In order for the universe to begin or have been created someone must have exited in the beginning and thus all the others have existed there after. With the workplace inclusion and diversity strategy, the human resources department should reflect on how to harness the potential of the workplace by ensuring that all workers understand the backgrounds of others in the Australian community (Pocock, Charlesworth, Chapman, 2013). Like other organizations in Australia, QUT must know that everyone brings a unique and immense skills and knowledge to the institution. According to Chapman, Skinner, and Pocock (2014), the skills are critical in enabling an individual to adopt the citizen-centric approach in delivering quality services to the Australian community. Given the social obligations of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, QUT should provide the staff with an opportunity to meet the balance work and life responsibilities and social obligations. Background Work Life Balance is a common theory with endless possibilities and rich in meaning. Everyone in Australia including the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders appreciates the significance of industrialization, especially the separation of homes from work thus becoming the genesis of the question of this theory. ILO (2004) reported that life before industrialization seemed to have been hard, but the question never arose because for anyone who never worked, perished thus forgetting about balance. The campaign to protect the conditions of workers stemmed from the time of the Wilberforces anti-slavery campaign and every leader in Australia has acknowledged the movement in improving the working conditions of minorities such as the Aboriginal Australians (Fairfax, 2015). Today, the social contract is irreplaceable because the majority of the population are in paid work. Both mothers and fathers alike spend most of their time away from the family thus diminishing the family responsibilitie s. Undeniably, the working parents experience pressure and stress on how to balance work and life. Work/Life Balance Issue QUT should invest in a work-life balance so that it can decrease stress; help attracts and retain employees, increase productivity, reduce absenteeism, and improve the working relationships and morale as demonstrated by Chapman et al. (2014). The cumulative effects of this situation are unfortunate to the Australian workers. The work-related stress is costing the country millions, while the human costs are beyond the national costs. The solution lies in practicing a healthy work-life balance (Disclaimer, n.d). With the organization reducing the head counts by attrition and layoffs, the few workers left have felt the need to work extremely hard and extra hours to save their jobs. The workers fear that the failure to push would surmount to losing their jobs. Without a balance causes poor health due to stress that has proved expensive to the institution. For instance, when the employees get burnout, meeting the organizational goals becomes involved thus cause conflicts. In fact, these w orkers can rarely help the firm to grow because they have problems with their personal lives thus putting them under strain. Advice to QUT The institution must go its way and implement its traditional strategy to hire new employees. However, this is possible if the HR and the executive team are aware of the problem because issues relating to work/life balance are important and personal. At the initial stage, it would be prudent to consult the employees by sending questionnaires to them and ask how they think the organization can overcome the workload burden facing them. Some of the questions that should be included in the surveys would be to seek the number of hours an employee is willing to work per week, whether from home or in the workplace, ask the time they spend thinking about vacations. It would also be necessary for the organization to ask them what causes them frustrations at QUT. The HR manager should adjust the questions to fit the firms objectives and the environment. The institution can improve the work/life balance by introducing the job-sharing opportunities options. For example, by increasing the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in the workplace, it would be possible to enhance the job-sharing opportunities. In fact, the institution is within this populations community, and thus they will find it easy to adjust and accommodate their private lives. Additionally, the organization should introduce the work-from-home policy or telecommuting so that the workers can work in the comfort of their homes as provided under the Fair Work Act (ILO, 2004). Telecommuting will best serve the Aboriginal people because they rarely want to lose their family contacts and events. QUT can also improve the work/life balance by adjusting the working hours, such that people can start later or earlier than usual. QUT stands to benefit from introducing the host-get-together parties for staff, especially during the working hours. Such opportunities would allow them to socialize as work and learn more about the cultures of the Aboriginal Australians. With the aging population, the country and by extension, QUT will suffer. The solution to the impending crisis is to plan on how the institution can hire new staff from the Torres Strait Islanders and Aboriginals. Through the buy-in and support initiatives, the company will match its production needs (Heathfield, 2016). Government Response In Australia, the Fair Work Act and the National Employment Standards provide different supports to help workers manage their work-life responsibilities as explained by Zubrick, Silburn, Lawrence, Mitrou, Blair, and Griffin (2005). For example, the collective enterprise agreements contain the flexibility class and minimum annual leave provisions. In fact, the parental leave is inevitable for all parents. The company should thus guarantee all workers including the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to have a 12-month unpaid leave, and 18 weeks paid parental leave. The Australian government expects businesses to consider parental rights to requesting flexible working conditions, community service leave, and personal leave (Managing Work /Life Balance International, 2010). The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders require compassionate leaves and community service leave because they value their communities. In most cases, this group appreciates the community ceremonies and family m eetings. In avoiding the cultural clash, it would be prudent to offer them community service leave and compassionate leave. Conclusion The profession has many people who have found the capacity to achieve a balance that has worked for them, such as providing personal fulfilment and career satisfaction. Stanford Essays - Lego, Toy Block, , Term Papers

Stanford Essay for Stanford As the beast ran rampant through the streets, I couldn't help but wonder if my work had been for naught. Trying to salvage any remains, I chased my dog from the room and stared at the havoc left in his wake. The city lay in ruins; the buildings were razed. The prospect of beginning from scratch was ponderous, but I instantly welcomed the challenge. With patience and determination, I began returning the small plastic bricks into their former glory; and then greater glory. Block by block I rebuilt my cities and block by block they built me. From these Legos I learned valuable lessons in versatility, creativity, and tenacity. The sheer vastness of possibilities that Legos present is both intimidating and exhilarating. The colorful blocks lay strewn about in no particular pattern and no particular order. From this chaos virtually anything can be created. As a child I gradually learned not to be intimidated by the endless possibilities but to embrace them, to relish the opportunity to create something from nothing. A preschool teacher recommended holding me back one year. Because I preferred the challenge of Legos to running about with the other children on the playground, she believed that I was socially and psychologically unprepared for school. Little did she realize that the creativity these blocks taught me became a cornerstone for the rest of my life. The seemingly insurmountable challenges gave me confidence and taught me to value cooperation. Watching my Lego edifices grow slowly but surely skyward taught me patience. Watching them fall again taught me the tenacity to continue onwards. Remembering how each task was created piece by piece allowed me to, line by line, memorize the works of history's greatest playwrights. I was able to join MEChA and help lead the Latino community as co-president, arranging events with our two hundred members. My organizational skills were further utilized as the commissioner of elections. Legos also taught me to help others and to ask for their help. I realized that with the creativity another person at my disposal, we could build things we had never even dreamed of on our own. During my senior year of High School I was introduced to crew. I was enthralled by the rhythmic grace of the sport. My dreams soon had me breathing the early morning air nearly flying over the surface of the water. This dream seemed destined to die unfulfilled because I grew up in a part of the country where crew refers to the roadside construction teams, but before the year was out I had convinced one of the Olympic coaches to take me under his wing. This interest is one I would like to develop further. As the years went by, my Lego blocks made way for the blocks of my future. But just like my experiences with Legos, I continue to choose individual blocks from chaos, each one bringing me closer to the life I dream of. The spires lead up to a diploma, the drawbridge leads to a family, and the buttresses support my lofty aspirations.

Now, without further delay, the 34 writing tips that will make you a better writer! 1. Daniel Pay attention to punctuation, especially to the correct use of commas and periods. These two punctuation marks regulate the flow of your thoughts, and they can make your text confusing even if the words are clear. 2. Thomas Participate in NaNoWriMo, which challenges you to write a 50,000 word novel in a month. I noticed that my writing has definitely improved over the course of the book - and it’s not even finished yet. 3. Bill Harper Try not to edit while you’re creating your first draft. Creating and editing are two separate processes using different sides of the brain, and if you try doing both at once you’ll lose. Make a deal with your internal editor that it will get the chance to rip your piece to shreds; it will just need to wait some time. A really nice trick is to switch off your monitor when you’re typing. You can’t edit what you can’t see. 4. Jacinta In a sentence: write daily for 30 minutes minimum! Its easy to notice the difference in a short time. Suddenly, ideas come to you and you think of other things to write. I always find these, where I slip into conversational as I am writing quickly, then go back and purge, purge, purge. 21. Akhil Tandulwadikar Don’t shy away from adopting the good habits that other writers use. Do not worry about the length of the article as long as it conveys the point. Of course, the fewer words you use, the better. Start the article with a short sentence, not more than 8 words. 22. Fourth Amendment - the Text, Origins, and Meaning The Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution is a section of the Bill of Rights that protects the people from being subjected to unreasonable searches and seizures of property by law enforcement officers or the federal government. However, the Fourth Amendment does not prohibit all searches and seizures, but only those that are found by a court to be unreasonable under the law. The Fifth Amendment, as part of the original 12 provisions of the Bill of Rights, was submitted to the states by Congress on September 25, 1789, and was ratified on December 15, 1791. The full text of the Fourth Amendment states: The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. Motivated by British Writs of Assistance Originally created to enforced the doctrine that â€Å"each man’s home is his castle,† The Fourth Amendment was written directly in response to British general warrants, called Writs of Assistance, in which the Crown would grant overarching, non-specific search powers to British law enforcement officials. Through Writs of Assistance, officials were free to search virtually any home they liked, at any time they liked, for any reason they liked or for no reason at all. Since some of the founding fathers had been smugglers in England, this was an especially unpopular concept in the colonies. Clearly, the framers of the Bill of Rights considered such colonial-era searches to be â€Å"unreasonable.† What Are ‘Unreasonable’ Searches Today? In deciding whether a particular search is reasonable, the courts attempt to weigh important interests: The extent to which the search intruded on the individuals Fourth Amendment rights and the extent to which the search was motivated by valid government interests, such as public safety. Warrantless Searches Not Always ‘Unreasonable’ Through several rulings, the U.S. Supreme Court has established that the extent to which an individual is protected by the Fourth Amendment depends, in part, on the location of the search or seizure. It is important to note that according to these rulings, there are several circumstances under which police may lawfully conduct â€Å"warrantless searches.† Searches in the Home:  According to Payton v. New York (1980), Searches and seizures conducted inside a home without a warrant are presumed to be unreasonable. However, such â€Å"warrantless searches† may be lawful under certain circumstances, including: If a responsible person gives the police permission to search the property. (Davis v. United States)If the search is conducted during a lawful arrest. (United States v. Robinson)If there is clear and immediate probable cause to conduct the search. (Payton v. New York)If the items being searched for are in plain view of the officers. (Maryland v. Macon) Searches of the Person:  In what is popularly known as its â€Å"stop and frisk† decision in the 1968 case of Terry v. Ohio, the Court ruled that when police officers see â€Å"unusual conduct† leading them to reasonably conclude that criminal activity may be taking place, the officers may briefly stop the suspicious person and make reasonable inquiries aimed at confirming or dispelling their suspicions. Searches in Schools:  Under most circumstances, school officials do not need to get a warrant before searching students, their lockers, backpacks, or other personal property. (New Jersey v. TLO)  Ã‚   Searches of Vehicles:  When police officers have probable cause to believe that a vehicle contains evidence of criminal activity, they may lawfully search any area of the vehicle in which the evidence might be found without a warrant. (Arizona v. Gant) In addition, police officers may lawfully conduct a traffic stop if they have reasonable suspicion that a traffic violation has occurred or that criminal activity is being carried out, for example, vehicles seen fleeing the scene of a crime. (United States v. Arvizu and Berekmer v. McCarty) Limited Power In practical terms, there is no means by which the government can exercise prior restraint on law enforcement officials. If an officer in Jackson, Mississippi wants to conduct a warrantless search without probable cause, the judiciary is not present at the time and cant prevent the search. This meant that the Fourth Amendment had little power or relevance until 1914. The Exclusionary Rule In Weeks v. United States (1914), the Supreme Court established what has been known as the exclusionary rule. The exclusionary rule states that evidence obtained through unconstitutional means is inadmissible in court and cannot be used as part of the prosecutions case. Before Weeks, law enforcement officials could violate the Fourth Amendment without being punished for it, secure the evidence, and use it at trial. The exclusionary rule establishes consequences for violating a suspects Fourth Amendment rights. Warrantless Searches The Supreme Court has held that searches and arrests can be performed without a warrant under some circumstances. Most notably, arrests and searches can be performed if the officer personally witnesses the suspect committing a misdemeanor, or has reasonable cause to believe that the suspect has committed a specific, documented felony. Warrantless Searches by Immigration Enforcement Officers On January 19, 2018, U.S. Border Patrol agents - without producing a warrant to do so - boarded a Greyhound bus outside the Fort Lauderdale, Florida station and arrested an adult female whose temporary visa had expired. Witnesses on the bus alleged that the Border Patrol agents had also asked everyone on board to show proof of U.S. citizenship. In response to inquiries, the Border Patrol’s Miami section headquarters confirmed that under the long-standing federal law, they can do that. Under Section 1357 of Title 8 of the United States Code, detailing the powers of immigration officers and employees, officers of the Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) can, without a warrant: interrogate any alien or person believed to be an alien as to his right to be or to remain in the United States;arrest any alien who in his presence or view is entering or attempting to enter the United States in violation of any law or regulation made in pursuance of law regulating the admission, exclusion, expulsion, or removal of aliens, or to arrest any alien in the United States, if he has reason to believe that the alien so arrested is in the United States in violation of any such law or regulation and is likely to escape before a warrant can be obtained for his arrest, but the alien arrested shall be taken without unnecessary delay for examination before an officer of the Service having authority to examine aliens as to their right to enter or remain in the United States; andwithin a reasonable distance from any external boundary of the United States, to board and search for aliens any vessel within the territorial waters of the United States and any railway car, aircraft, con veyance, or vehicle, and within a distance of twenty-five miles from any such external boundary to have access to private lands, but not dwellings, for the purpose of patrolling the border to prevent the illegal entry of aliens into the United States. In addition, The Immigration and Nationality Act 287(a)(3) and CFR 287 (a)(3) states that Immigration Officers, without a warrant, may â€Å"within a reasonable distance from any external boundary of the United States...board and search for aliens in any vessel within the territorial waters of the United States and any railcar, aircraft, conveyance, or vehicle.† The Immigration and Nationality Act defines â€Å"Reasonable distance† as 100 miles.   The Right to Privacy Although the implicit privacy rights established in Griswold v. Connecticut (1965) and Roe v. Wade (1973) are most often associated with the Fourteenth Amendment, the Fourth Amendment contains an explicit right of the people to be secure in their persons that is also strongly indicative of a constitutional right to privacy. The Discrimination of Nonnative Speakers in the Workplace Essay Maria, an employee of Latino decent feels she was unfairly eliminated for a promotion because of her distinct accent; she has filed a complaint alleging the company has engaged in discriminatory practices. Evaluation Maria is a good employee but is often loud and aggressive in her approach to co-workers and supervisors. The employee record shows there were problems with tardiness and attendance and twice supervisors for these infractions have counseled her. Maria has pointed out that she is the only Latino, person of color and woman in her department and states a supervisor stated she was not promoted because he feared clients would have trouble understanding her accent. Maria has been with the company for ten years and in her current position for seven. She holds a graduate degree and claims her low evaluations reflect a built in bias by her white male supervisors. Despite the fact that Alex, who too holds a graduate degree, has less time with the company, he had better performance evaluations than Maria and was offered the promotion. The company is admitting that Maria’s accent was a factor in their decision but claim it they did not discriminate against Maria by not offering her the promotion related to her accent alone. The company also states that clear communication was an essential component of the job in question, but was it the only component needed. What does Maria do well that could have superseded this essential component? The company may have thought they were not discriminating against Maria but by acknowledging and then stating she was not being promoted solely based on the trouble of understanding her accent, the company has indeed engaged in discriminatory practices and I feel Maria may have a valid argument, and case against her employer.   Latinos in America Despite several decades of legislation and policies designed to eliminate unfair treatment, unfortunately individual and institutional discrimination still exist today (Pavalko, Mossakowski, Hamilton, 2013, p. 27-28). The traditional focus of psychological research on prejudice and discrimination has been on black-white relations while research on the prejudice and discrimination of Latinos has been astonishingly rare (Dovidio, Gluszek, John, Ditlmann, Lagunes, 2010, p.60). A review of articles on discrimination and prejudice in three of the leading social psychology journals revealed that sixty-one percent of articles focused on blacks whereas only seven percent of the articles focused on Latino discrimination and prejudice (Dovidio et al., 2010, p. 60). As of 2011, there were fifty million Hispanic people living in the United States accounting for sixteen percent of the nations total population. African American individuals living in the United States accounted for forty three million people living in the United States therefore people of Hispanic origin account for the nations largest ethnic or race minority living in the United States (United States Census Bureau, 2014, Table 1). Although Latinos earn an average of $6,000 dollars, more than blacks a year Latinos are still earning on average $15,000 less a year then Caucasians (Dovidio et al., 2010, p. 60). When it comes to educational attainment for those over twenty-five years of age 30.5% of whites, 17.3% of blacks and 12.5% of Latinos hold a bachelor’s degree or higher (Dovidio et al., 2010, p. 60). As a registered nurse, I was shocked to discover that of all the registered nurses in the United States only 1.7% are of Latino decent (Moceri, 2012,  ¶ 1). Upon reading this data I started paying attention to not only my unit but to others within the hospital, we have one Latino nurse out of twenty who work on my floor but inquiring of other floors, they indeed had no Latino nurses employed. This was quite shocking as I work in a heavily Latino populated area therefore caring for this population. Greater racial and ethnic diversity in the health professions would promote patient-provider relationships (Moceri, 2012,  ¶ 1). I feel this to be true where I am employed as a registered nurse, our demographic of patient would  be better served if we had a higher inclusion of Latino nurses because they may be able to relate better to people like themselves. National Origin, Accents and the Law Although employers generally feel justified in denying immigrants employment based on the needs of their businesses, immigrants have regularly filed discriminating lawsuits against these companies since the 1980’s under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which protects immigrants from being discriminated against based on their national origin (Texas Law Review, 20xx, p. 1496). Title VII has been used to litigate against employers who institute English-only rules as non-native English immigrants equate this to national origin discrimination (Texas Law review, 20XX, p. 1496). It seems that under the civil rights act of 1964, these individuals would have a legitimate claim of discrimination but despite the strong links, courts rarely rule in favor of the plaintiffs in these cases. The courts find that there is not significant harm caused to the plaintiff or sufficient business reasons were laid forth by the employer as reasons to justify its decision (Texas Law Review, 20 xx, p. 1496) Title VII states: â€Å"It shall be an unlawful employment practice for an employer – (1) To fail or refuse to hire or to discharge any individual, or otherwise to discriminate against any individual with respect to his compensation, terms, conditions, or privileges of employment, because of such individual’s†¦ national origin; or (2) To limit, segregate, or classify his employees or applicants for employment in any way which would deprive or tend to deprive any individual of employment opportunities or otherwise adversely affect his status as an employee, because of such individual’s†¦national origin† (Texas Law Review, 20xx, p.1497). The problem with article VII is the term, National Origin and its broad interpretation. The Supreme Court examined national origin in 1973 court case Espinoza vs Farah Manufacturing and found national origin â€Å"on its face refers to the country where a person was born, or more broadly, the country from which his or her ancestors came† (Texas Law Review, 20xx p.1497). Because this is still broad in its interpretation, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) defined national origin  as â€Å"the denial of equal employment opportunity because of an individuals, or his or her ancestor’s place of origin† (Texas Law Review, 20xx, p. 1497). Clearly, there is a lot of debate and even more interpretation on what national origin means in the court of law, perhaps this needs a definite clarification to stop perceptions of what individuals think it means. Attorneys are word wizards and if there is not a clear definition of what these two words means they will twist, turn and manipulate them, which in turn may end up harming their plaintiff’s chances of victory. Diversity Planning If I were an executive of Marias Company, I would realize the first stop into stopping future litigation of the same nature is to research and plan a strategic diversity plan. Prior to the development of the diversity department current employees will be gathered where management will explain how important diversity is to the company and it will be launching a new diversity team. The first step in this project is to appoint a diversity manager to serve over a diversity committee that is made up various members with connections to the community’s diverse community groups and organizations. This ensures the company has networking opportunities in order to recruit a wide variety of top shelf minority candidates for employment for a diverse work force within the company. Once the workforce becomes more diverse, employees will visually see others like them instead of seeing them and then the Caucasian men who are their superiors. Not only will employees know how important a culturally diverse workforce is to the company, so will the outside community. The company will promote, advertise and market specifically to the community groups and organizations that promote minorities from African Americans, Latino, Women, Mexican American, Muslims, etc. All groups will be recognized as a crucial cultural group to the success of not only the newly created diversity team but to the company and community itself. All company employees will have the ability to attend monthly diversity meetings where they can bring ideas to the table when it comes to recruitment, employment, questions or concerns. The company will also have a complete open door policy to discuss any concerns, from possible  mistreatment to harassment there will be no repercussions for any employee bringing a concern to the committee for addressing. If a complaint is made, there will be a strict twenty four to forty eight hour period in which the initial complaint will be investigated and dealt with. The diversity team will then act appropriately and upon conclusion, will alert the complainant of the findings. The diversity team will include a trained mediator in situations where both parties must come together to work out differences and come to an agreed upon contingency plan that’s main goal is to make a cohesive work environment. To ensure fairness and justice promotions are to be granted thru the utilization of stringent parameters. Time with the company and disciplinary actions are viewed as a first step in the candidate’s process however, they will not be the only factor. The company will view each candidate’s strengths subsequently corresponding each to the positions requirements to find the best very fit for the position. Once the best match on paper is founded face-to-face interviews will be conducted that will include a standard set of questions for each candidate to answer, based upon the positions requirements. Although the questions do not include right nor wrong answer it will be up to one person from the human resource department and one individual from the human resource department to ultimately come to an agreement on the best fit for the company. Once the decision is made the employee whose resume and in person interview did not warrant the promotion will receive a detailed letter with the factors that did not warrant a promotion at this time. This employee will also have the opportunity to work with both the diversity committee (despite the individual’s ethnicity) and the human resource department to improve substandard criteria that will better serve them for future promotions. He adheres to his philosophy and conscience, knowing that he will inevitably be executed. One who is reading this may reply by thinking More's decision was asinine. The reader may believe that life is the greatest value to man, and to place anything above it would be asinine. More's behavior was bizarre even to his own time period. His daughter, Margaret, pleaded for him to sign the oath, "Then say the words of the oath and in your heart think otherwise"(81). Her father could not morally be satisfied by this. More believed that when an oath is taken, one is placing his pledging his self and soul. " When a man takes an oath, Meg, he's holding his own self in his own hands. And if he opens his fingers then- he needn't hope to find himself again"(81). On the other hand, Richard Rich's actions were not based upon conscience or morality. He would sacrifice his friend's life in order to receive a job offer. After Rich testifies, and More learns that Rich was appointed Attorney- General for Wales, he is full of disgust and disbelief when he says, " For Wales? Why, Richard, it profits a man nothing to give his soul for the world.....But for Wales!"(92). Rich can be portrayed as the lowest of life forms. More implies that Rich abandoned his conscience to have a title, which in the whole scheme of things is really insignificant. On that day of judgment,

Gary, the team captain, and Julius, his black roommate, got off to a rough start. In the beginning, each disliked the other intensely. a) Describe why they disliked each other so much. b) In the movie, the two young men had a â€Å"heart-to heart† talk where each angrily told the other how he really felt. Describe the episode and why it was so significant. 1. A) Gary and Julius disliked each other because of the color of their skin and both of them thought that the other was not doing their job of a leader and bringing the team together. These boys were fearful of the change and each other, which lead them to avoid each other as much as possible. When together, the boys would communicate in unproductive ways; they treated each other with complete disrespect and without trust for one another. b) In their â€Å"heart-to heart† talk, Gary tells Julius that he is wasting his football talent by not listening to anyone. After an intense practice, Gerry and Julius bumped into each other. Gerry, tired of added practices that Boone had enforced, took advantage of the situation by trying to gather facts to tell Boon. Gerry ended up accusing Julius of being selfish; a stubborn player with a bad attitude. Julius responded to Gerry in a way that allowed Gerry to realize that he wasn’t being a true leader. Julius highlighted that â€Å"his white buddies† were not blocking for Rev. In that moment, Gerry realized that he hadn’t been a good team captain as he had been treating players unequally. 2) Other than Gary, Julius, and the two coaches, describe two other individuals who made a difference and who made a significant contribution to the success of the Titans. 2. The two other individuals that made a difference were Lewis Lastik and Ronnie Bass . Lewis Lastik was the first person who talked with someone from the other race and got along with them. When he was questioned by Julius why he was not sitting with his own race, he replied by saying that he is with everyone no matter their color. He showed how teammates should interact and behave with each other. Ronnie Bass also had a huge impact on the team. After Jerry Harris was injured, Ronnie Bass stepped in his place and emerged as one of the leaders of the team. Even though he was different from everyone else, he got along with everyone and help the team grow. 3) Provide three examples which illustrate how a friend or outsider was able to help another to see blind spots. 3. 1) Gary had the blind spot and Julius helped him to see it. The blind spot was that Gary was not doing his job as being the leader of the team and treating everyone equally. This was significant because it helped Gary realize that he is not trying his best to be a leader and bring together all his teammates. Coach Boone had the blind spot and Coach Yoast helped him to see it. The blind spot was that Coach Boone cared more about winning games and about him being a winner. This was significant because, Coach Boone realized that he was blinded by his own ambition about winning games and being seen as a winner and he should care more about his players. 3) Coach Yoast had the blind spot and his daughter Sheryl Yoast helped him to see it. The blind spot was that Coach Yoast had too much pride in himself to ask for coach Boone’s help on defense. This was significant because Coach Yoast realized that in order to win the game, he needs Coach Boone’s help. 4) Identify two conflict styles†¦ one used by Gary and one used by Julius and provide specific examples. 4. Gary used the Competing conflict style. The competing style has a win-lose approach in which the conflict is solved in the favor of the person who wants control of the situation and has low concern for others. Gary used this style when he was talking to Coach Boone about reserving half of the starting positions for the white players and not needing any black players on the defense. He also used this style , when Julius put up a picture of the famous Black Power Salute on his side of the room and Gary wanted him to remove the picture which led to a fight between them and some of the other players. Julius used the Collaborating conflict style. In this conflict style, the two parties involved share their ideas and work together to solve a problem. This conflict style has a win-win approach. Julius used his style when Gary failed to show up to his house to play basketball and the conflict among the two started to build again, Julius went to Gary’s house to retain the close friendship that they had built. Themes and Dialogue of O’Brien in The Things They Carried War has done many horrible things to many people throughout time all over the world. War experience filled with death, suspense, and constant fear has swept through millions and millions of people who are still scared by the horrific experience. To some so horrific that a normal life, post war, was almost unbearable. But some were able to take the experience and share it to the world.Tim O’Brien is a perfect example of this. O’Brien was born in 1946 in the Midwest, but once of age was drafted into the Vietnam War. O’Brien only served for one year from 1969 to 1970, but nevertheless, the memories gathered in that year lasted him a lifetime. (Herzog) These memories, though some held them in, O’Brien used them to transform his writings to some of the most accurate and touching pieces about war in our generation. They established O’Brien as on of the most important soldier-authors of the V ietnam generation; furthermore, they establish his reputation as one of America’s most notable postmodernist writers – not only for his themes but also for the structure of his books and his exploration from multiple perspectives of problematic nature of truth and reality† (Herzog, 78). O’Brien was a man who had an objective to be original and construct all of his memories to others the best way he could. And the only way to do that was his way.In an interview of O’Brien, Herzog quotes from him â€Å"In this new book [The Things They Carried] I forced myself to try and invent a form. I had never invented form before. † His writings are unique and compared to the normal dialogue of introducing characters; O’Brien takes a different approach and makes his own style. In the book The Things They Carried, O’Brien uses materialistic belongings to show his experiences from a different perspective on war and the people in it without the immediate use of dialogue. O’Brien’s story The Things They Carried is a story of company of men that are in the Vietnam War.These men are normal people, called into duty of war by draft. Though each person is not introduced by age, and what their history was, they way they are introduced is by what they carry in their endless walk through unknown jungles. But though they are introduced by only what their position and what they carry, the personal level of knowing a character is better than ever. The first man introduced is First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross. He is the leader of all the men and whom everyone answers to. But for a man that is the one in charge his mind is everywhere but on the war.He carries letters and two photos from a girl named Martha from home and keeps a pebble in his mouth that she sent him. He is madly in love with her but all of her letters are not love letters from a significant other but just friendly letters. â€Å"They were not love letters, but Lieutenant Cross was hoping, so he kept them folded in plastic at the bottom of his rucksack† (LaPlante, 79). He wants to be focused on the war but his loving thoughts of her haunts him and takes him away from the reality of war he is in. It took him as much as a fellow soldier getting shot in the head before he knew how much a problem he had.The machine gunner was a man by the name of Henry Dobbins. Being the machine gunner he had to carry a twenty-three pound gun unloaded, but it was always loaded, and fifteen pounds worth of ammunition strapped around his chest and shoulders. Personally he was introduced as a big man that carried Black Flag insecticide, and extra food rations. Though not a huge introduction, he can still be known as a person but also with some mystery of who he is. From his belongings, Sanders can be seen as a big man that would be a brute force character in the company, but also a vital part to the company.His responsibility as the machine gunner with all the weight and his importance in battle puts him as a leader and a trusted man that people can rely to. His character and personality as a strong man, who can be there when he is needed, and do whatever needs to be done can be seen alone from O’Brien’s writings without any dialogue needed. Just from his position and his responsibilities his character even personality can be understood and noticed. The RTO or the man who had to carry the radio was named Mitchell Sanders. The radio he had to carry was twenty-six pounds with its battery.He also carries condoms and starched tiger fatigues for special occasions. He is an important man to the crew but he also can be seen as a light guy, more some of the others. He carries condoms even with no need for them at all and Norman Bowker, one of the other soldiers, carries a thumb that Sanders had cut off of a Vietnamese kid only fifteen or sixteen. So Sanders can be seen as not as much of a serious guy but still responsible enough to have the responsibilities of the holding on the their only way of communication.Dave Jensen was introduced with being all about personal hygiene. He carried a toothbrush, dental floss, several bars of soap taken from hotels, three extra pairs of socks, and Dr. Scholl’s foot powder for trench foot, earplugs, and extra sand bags for extra protection at night, and for superstitious reasons a rabbit’s foot. His position in the company is never mentioned but immediately by looking at all of the things he carries, it is seen he carries almost twice as much as anyone else. Through his items his personality of being over cautious stands out.He is not a very big character in the story but because of how O’Brien clearly shows how cautious and scared he is to make him a bigger character. Everyone is important in the company and when O’Brien talks about Jensen, he is referring to a quarter of the soldiers that were in war that were just like him. Though these are just a few to the many he introduces to the reader, all from O’Brien’s different writing style can be experienced and enjoyed more. O’Brien with his writings uses materials of what the soldiers carry to almost control the reader about how to feel about the character, and used this writing style in other books of his.His writing style can take you inside of the different soldiers heart and mind and with the different stories in The Things They Carried other detail are added to the story so nobody can know if his stories are real or true. This gives readers more freedom to have personal opinions. â€Å"The element of perception has to do with uncertainty†¦. The whole stew of variables determines what we perceive and what call real† (Herzog, Interview). O’Brien’s writing style all has a purpose with its creativity.The Things that they carry are not only the materialistic things that the soldiers personally have but it could be anything. à ¢â‚¬Å"Things is framed around the burdens we carry, not just war, not just physical, but spiritual as well† (Herzog, Interview). Just telling a story wasn’t enough; O’Brien wanted the reader to live it, to experience it like he did with his writing style. He wanted to tell you the story but leave mystery, his writing style was an attempt to expand readers mind further than ever before. O’Brien said, â€Å"A good piece of fiction, in my view, does not offer solutions.Good stories deal with our moral struggles, our uncertainties, our dreams, our blunders, our contradictions, our endless quest for understanding. Also, its influence has usually been indirect rather than direct. Research questions and justification KFC entered India in the year 1995, as Kentucky Fried Chicken, but due to the several agitations by the people from many sectors against it stating that KFC is not adhereing to the food safety norms that were prevailing in India and the issues of ill treating the chicken in the farms which supply meat to KFC (ICMR, 2005)etc, this was also followed by the agitation from the farmer leaders stating that companies like kfc encourage farmers go away from farming the normal crops to rear chicken. Adding to this most of the vegetarians from Mumbai treating kfc serve only non-vegetarian food and they never turned up in the restaurant. Due to all these reasons which ignored to study the business, cultural influence on the food consumption kfc had to leave India and it reenterd India after chaning its name to the now KFC from its past Kentucky Fried Chicken. This shows the importance of the study of cultural influences on the new market entry decisions. There are several issues to be answered through this research questions. First of decision should be made on whether the people are willing to accept any such item which is local in flavor. To identify this questionnaire is made with a question, Is that advisable to introduce local flavors in KFC? This is done along with other questions which enquire about the position of the KFC in the minds of the customers how they are perceiving its services and the ambience at the restaurants. The second stage of the survey process is aimed at actual introduction of the local menu item, this is to be carried out after the initial stage was complete and once any such decision was taken to introduce the local menu item and then if this is the time to decide which menu item should be introduced, based on the taste of the customers who regularly eat outside of their homes in quick serving restaurants like KFC. This survey could be done at other such outlets which are similar to KFC or those which have good appeal on the gourmets, and any other such hotels or restaurants which are famous for their exclusive or multi cuisine recipes. This survey also will be carried out online for a specific period of time till the intended sample size of the objective is fulfilled. Actual aiming sample size for online survey is 2000 people. After concluding the two types of surveys which will be done through different channels, the data collected here will be qualitatively analised using the statistical charts. This will enable us to go through an easy process of decision making as the figures here will disclose the intention of the people who participated in the surveys. Based on these results the recommendation ot the company whether there is a necesiity for the introduction of the local item is necessary or it is better to continue with the existing standard items with the KFC. Once it is decided to introduce the local flavour or local menu item decision to zero down on which type of item should be introduced should be made. This is based on the second survey, though there will be no concrete decision can be made to go out with the items or the spices being used in the survey list as is , KFC can get a clue which type of items can be liked by the people who visit the restaurants of KFC. For the second issue which is aimed at studying the cross cultural issues of introduction of Indian food in other countries, and the cross cultural issues to be taken care for KFC. The whole data is collected through secondary source only which include internet, This whole study is based on the exploratory method of research. Exploratory research frequently relies on secondary data for its research like reviewing the available literatures and/or data, also depends on qualitative approaches which include data collected by other researchers through informal discussions with the people involved or related to the fast food industry and the study of culture on the eating habits, employees, and the management or the competitors who can reveal different things which may be useful for carrying on the whole research successfully. And more such formal approaches of thorough in-depth interviews which were already available from the said focus groups, using of different projective methods, can a lso depend on the case studies or pilot studies which are already done by several intellectual individuals based on the primary information. Ethical issues and procedures: Fair practices are followed through out the study process while collecting the data , analyzing the data. All such disclosures which ever are necessary and important will be made to fulfill the analysis process. No data is suppressed or over described through the process. No stereotypic analysis will be made based on the fraud made by Ramalinga raju and his aids who had still had due respect till the case is to be finalized. No data will be collected or used which is copyright material, without the permission or only if it is free to use. Data Analysis both qualitative and quantitative to analysis of the data should our recommended league proposal to analyse the data in this research process. He grounded Theory approach (Strauss and Corbin, 1998) which uses the open coding, axial coding and selective coding all the tools which will be used to analyse the data obtained from in-depth interviews and extensive participation of the survey participants. to arrival at a particular theory through a less formalised and with less procedurals while maintaining rigourous data in a systematic way is only possible with this grounded theory approach and the sees its advantage for the data analysis more quickly. Apart from this as a part of the research process that data will be analysed by statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS), which is a software package which he is being used for data management and statistical analysis. This will help in the research process to profile the respondents to the survey. Resource Requirement The college library facilities and the learning support services are the best resources for the publishing copies as well as the electronic copies of the required a literature which will be useful for literature review. Usage of both telephone and Internet facilities are very essential to carry on the fieldwork, survey which he is intended to carry on at the any of the outlets of the KFC. Continuous interaction with the store managers and other executives of the restaurant is very essential as there are key contributors for the whole research process. Frequent travelling is also can be expected to visit the place of fieldwork to negotiate and convened our research process with the help of the store manager and other authorities of the KFC.
